How Do You Know If Blue Light Blocking Glasses Work?

| 10.12.2020

Do you own blue light blocking glasses, also called gaming glasses, and are you wondering if they work?

Eyeglass manufacturers usually advertise numbers to indicate the percentage of blue light blocked by their glasses. Typically, they block between 30% and 90% of blue light. You will see below a straightforward test to check your glasses’ effectiveness for yourself.

Maybe you own a pair of glasses with yellow or orange lenses, and you find that they look like the increasingly popular Blue Light Blocking Glasses (like Gunnar glasses, for example). Take the test with this scope to see if it works.

Are you not satisfied with your current glasses, ordo your glasses not pass the test? Here we will talk about if the blue light blocking glasses work or not.

Do blue light blocking glasses really work?

To test the filter of anti-blue light glasses, it is good to remember what this blue light is. Light is a wave, and depending on the frequency of this wave, the human eye perceives this light in different colors. Light is perceived as blue when its frequency is between ~ 390 and ~ 500nm in the electromagnetic spectrum.

Contrary to popular belief, not all blue lights are bad. Only the lowest frequencies, from 390nm to 450nm, are harmful to the eyes. These frequencies are close to UV (Ultraviolet), and as you know, these waves are bad for the eyes and the skin. This is why you apply sunscreen to your skin and wear sunglasses.

It’s the same for blue light; to protect yourself, you need to wear glasses that block the lower frequencies of blue light. These glasses have lenses with a protective layer that filters out harmful frequencies in the light spectrum. This filter prevents bad blue light from entering your eyes.

Test your blue light blocking glasses

  1. Do not wear your glasses on your nose;
  2. If necessary, disable your software which filters blue light (for example, flux or Twilight);
  3. Look at the two-color bars. They must be different;
  4. Put your anti-blue light glasses on your nose;
  5. Compare the two-color bars. They should now be identical.

Don’t panic if the two-color bars are not quite similar; no telescope filters 100% of the entire blue light wavelength.  What is important is that your glasses filter out bad blue light, which is harmful to your eyes and sleep. The more the colors are identical to the left of line 450, the more efficient your glasses.

For a telescope to effectively protect against blue light, it must block light with a wavelength of less than 450nm. The graphic below represents the colors of visible light. On the top bar are the natural colors. A filter has been applied to the same colors on the bottom bar to remove the blue light frequencies (this, therefore, removes the blue color).

Please note, the test only works for glasses with tinted lenses (amber, yellow, or orange). Often, special gamer glasses or specially designed to rest the eyes have colored lenses. Glasses specially designed for working on the computer have clear lenses, these retain natural colors, and the test will not work.
