Love Reading, but Hate the Eye Strain? Here Are 5 Helpful Tips!

| 20.04.2021

Many people derive great joy from reading. They read during the morning commute, they read while waiting for someone, and they read right before bed.

The only downside to excessive reading, as the avid reader will have you know, is eye strain. It doesn’t matter if you’re poring over a traditional paperback or scrolling down on an e-reader, eye strain or ocular fatigue results from both.

If you have experienced any of the following symptoms, you might be a victim of eye strain:

  • Blurred vision
  • Headaches
  • Dry, itchy eyes

It is pertinent to mention here that reading is only one of the reasons behind eye strain. Whenever you use your eyes for extended periods of time working on the computer or even driving, you can experience the aforementioned symptoms.

What causes eye strain?

Known as asthenopia in the field of medicine, eye strain can also sometimes entail double vision. This is almost always brought on by the unrestricted use of digital devices. If allowed to escalate, it can also lead to headaches, sensitivity to light, and trouble focusing on words and pictures. In some cases, eye strain can affect concentration as well as the ability to work, causing a great deal of anxiety.

How to prevent eye strain?

More often than not, a little rest or a good night’s sleep can help relieve these symptoms. Sometimes, however, symptoms might persist and even though it might not be cause for alarm, please be advised to visit a doctor at the earliest.

Reading is the last activity for pretty much everyone as they lay in bed to sleep, regardless of whether it’s a book or an online article. If you’re prone to doing this night after night, it might serve you well to invest in a pair of blue light reading glasses.

Blue light reading glasses

These glasses have been designed to block out blue light which emits from the screens of all digital devices. Blue light glasses should prove especially helpful if it’s close to impossible for you to take frequent breaks. If the nature of your work is such, for example, that it’s mandatory for you to log in a certain number of hours every single day, it’s safe to assume that you’re not going to be able to cut down on that time. Even if you do manage to do so, the effects will only be temporary at best.

The best part is that a pair of blue light blocking reading glasses aren’t just for reading, as the name suggests. You can use the pair as you would regular reading glasses, which means that even if you’re working on a computer, you will be able to reap its benefits.

The 20-20-20 rule

If you are not able to stay apart from your digital device for longer intervals, this is a great rule to follow. Not only is it easy to remember, it is even simpler to follow.

The idea is for you to give your eyes a break every 20 minutes by stepping away from your computer or e-reader and focusing your eyes on something that is at least 20 feet away, for 20 odd seconds.

Now that’s not difficult to do, is it?

Adjust the position of your computer

Make sure that your computer is at arm’s length from you. The screen should be just below eye level to avoid strain. Go a step further and increase the font size on your computer to make for easy reading, in case the distance is causing you to squint.

Use eye drops

Constantly staring at a screen can affect the number of times your eyes blink. The lesser you blink, the more prone your eyes will be to drying out. An easy fix for this would be to use eye drops.

Take frequent breaks

The fact is that we use our eyes the entire time that we’re up and active. You might find it helpful to break up your day into fragments that alternate between activities that are more visually demanding and those that aren’t.

As you can see, eye strain isn’t as big an issue than it is a pesky problem. There are plenty of measures you can take to relieve the discomfort caused by it, including purchasing a brand new pair of chic reading glasses from Muunel. Their eyewear has been designed keeping in mind the needs of modern professionals the world over.
